Hand 02Legality, licensing and eligibility differ
Whether poker may be offered at all, who may operate it, who may play, what must be verified, whether an operator must hold a licence and what happens when a player and a room disagree are all matters of local law. They differ between countries, between states and provinces within a country, and they change — sometimes quickly.
On top of that, eligibility is usually a matter of both where you are and who you are. The published terms of any operator will state who may open an account, from where, and what verification is required. Those terms are the relevant document, and they are the ones to read rather than any general explanation, including this one.

- Age, residency and identity verification are eligibility questions, and each operator states its own.

- Whether a win is taxable, at what rate and with what reporting, is a question for your own tax authority.

Hand 03The risk of loss is real and structural
Gambling involves the risk of losing money, and in poker that risk is a structural feature rather than an occasional bad outcome. Every cash game takes a fee out of every pot it deals, and every tournament keeps a share of every buy-in, so the money returned to players as a group is less than the money they put in. The average player is therefore behind before a single card is dealt, and no amount of study removes that arithmetic.
Beyond the arithmetic there is the harm that can follow: losses larger than intended, borrowing, damage to relationships, and effects on mental health. These are common enough that most countries operate free and confidential support services, and using one is not a sign that something unusual has happened.
If gambling is causing harm
Free and confidential support exists in most countries through national gambling-harm helplines, for players and for the people around them. Contacting one is a practical step, not an admission, and it costs nothing.
Hand 04The lines this site asks you not to cross
The advice at the end of every page in this series is the same because it is the only advice that reliably helps: never stake money you cannot afford to lose, never borrow to play, and never chase a loss with a larger commitment. None of those statements is about skill; they are about keeping a pastime from becoming a problem.
If any of them is already difficult to keep, that is useful information rather than a failure, and it is exactly the situation the support services above exist for.
