About this project
Table Stakes explains how poker is built as a product: the seats, the blinds, the fee, the structure and the arithmetic of variance. It is written for adults, it is funded by a disclosed affiliate link, and it does not advise anybody to play.
Hand 01What this project is
This is one instalment in a series of small educational sites, each one covering a different corner of gambling as a product rather than as an activity to be encouraged. Earlier instalments covered wagering odds, bankroll management, tilt, withdrawal mechanics, bonus conditions, provably fair systems, player limits, identity verification, game maths, payment rails, account security, complaint escalation, bet settlement, exchanges, handicap lines, value betting, in-play markets, antepost markets, pari-mutuel pools, live dealer studios, operator licensing, loyalty programmes, gambling taxation and fantasy contests. This one is about poker tables.
Everything here describes mechanism: how a blind works, what position decides, how a hand is compared with another, how a fee out of every pot changes the arithmetic, how a tournament structure shapes play, and why a run of results tells you so little. The intent is that a reader who finishes these pages can open any room's rulebook and fee schedule and understand exactly what they are reading.

Hand 02What this project deliberately does not do
It does not recommend a room, a stake, a starting hand, a line of play or a session length, and it does not tell anybody whether gambling is permitted where they live or whether they are eligible. It names no operator as a place to play and no adviser as a source of help, because both would be a claim nobody here is positioned to make.
It also does not pretend the arithmetic can be beaten by attitude. The fee comes out of every pot before anyone is paid, and the average player is behind by that share. A guide that described a raked game without saying so would be describing a different game from the one people actually sit down at.

Hand 03How the site is funded
The header and the closing panel of most pages carry a link to a partner operator. It is a sponsored link, it is marked as such in the markup, and if a reader opens an account through it the site may be paid, at no additional cost to the reader. The link does not change the content of the pages, and no operator has any input into what is written here.
The disclosure also carries the risk warning, because a page about gambling that mentioned money without mentioning loss would be incomplete. The full wording appears at the foot of every page in this site.

Begin with the structure, not the strategy
The seats decide who acts last, and the fee decides how much has to be won before anything is being played for. Both are settled before the cards arrive.
